Key January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

The arrival of a new year brings fresh tax obligations. January 2026 features crucial tax deadlines for individuals related to estimated tax payments, tip income reporting, and overall tax planning strategy. Here’s a detailed breakdown to help you stay ahead.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Consultation

The beginning of the tax season is upon us. If you haven’t yet arranged your tax preparation appointment, now is the time. Early scheduling ensures that your CPA or bookkeeper can devote ample attention to your needs before schedules become overwhelming. Image 1

January 12 - Tip Income Reporting Deadline

Employees in tip-based jobs, take note: If you accrued more than $20 in tips in December, you must report these to your employer by January 12. Utilize IRS Form 4070, or submit a statement containing required details such as your signature, personal and employer’s information, and the total tips earned in the stipulated period. Your employer is obligated to withhold FICA and other taxes on these amounts. Should your base pay not cover these withholdings, any shortfall will be indicated in box 8 of your W-2 form, payable when you file your tax return.

January 15 - Final Estimated Tax Payment for 2025

Mark January 15 as the deadline for your fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year. Failing to remit payment by this date requires you to file your 2025 tax return and pay any outstanding tax by February 2, 2026, to circumvent penalties for underpayment of estimated taxes.
